Nestled in the heart of Palm Springs, El Mirasol Villas boasts a rich history steeped in charm and allure. Translating to “look at the sun” or whimsically as “sunflower” or “flower in the sun,” this iconic retreat began its journey in 1947, crafted by the legendary Howard Hughes. With whispers of its creation aimed at captivating the enchanting Elizabeth Taylor, its allure has since captivated many, including Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe, and other famed personalities linked to Hughes.
In the early 1950s, the original six-building compound evolved into a hotel, with screen legend Bob Hope taking ownership in the 1960s. By 1975, El Mirasol Villas reemerged as Palm Springs’ first gay hotel, marking a new era of inclusivity and warmth. The north side annexation in the early 1980s expanded its charm, shaping the vibrant property we celebrate today.
Since acquiring the hotel in October 2000, we, Paul and Bruce, have lovingly upheld its legacy as a “flower in the sun,” offering a welcoming sanctuary for gay men from around the globe. El Mirasol Villas continues to shine as a storied gem in the desert, where history and hospitality harmoniously blend.
